Depression and Suicide

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, about 5% of children and adolescents may become seriously depressed. Early recognition and treatment is important.

Some common signs of depression in children and adolescents include:

--Long-lasting irritability or sadness

--Loss of pleasure in activities they used to enjoy

--Withdrawing from friends and family

--Failure to make expected weight gains

--Physical complaints such as headaches and stomach aches

--Frequent absence from school/drop in grades

--Trouble getting along at home or school

--Persistent boredom or lack of energy

--Poor concentration

--Major change in sleeping or eating habits

--Talk of death or suicide

--Alcohol or drug use

Suicide is a major cause of death among young people. In addition to the signs of depression above, some warning signs of suicide include:

--Deep depression

--Comments such as "It would be better if I was dead"

--Writings or drawings with messages of self-destruction

--Impulsive or reckless behavior

--Giving away favorite possessions

--Putting personal affairs in order

--Signs of a suicide plan

Ways to help someone who is depressed/suicidal:

--Be willing to listen. You don't have to have the answers. Just listen.

--Take the problem seriously. Don't putdown the other person or their problems.

--Encourage your friend to talk to other people. If necessary, offer to go along to talk with a counselor or another informed adult.

--Let the person know you care by spending time together, inviting him to join you in activities and sticking with the person.

--Never keep suicide thoughts or threats a secret!!

--Tell someone right away who can help. If the person you tell doesn't help, keep telling until someone listens and does something about it!
