Dollars for Scholars is a community organization
for local high school graduates. It is affiliated with the nonprofit Citizens'
Scholarship Foundation of America, but is governed and operated by unpaid
volunteers for the Eagle Grove Community School District. All donations
to Dollars for Scholars go into scholarships for local graduates.
The overall goal of Dollars for Scholars is to
expand access to higher education for Eagle Grove area students and to encounter
higher levels of achievement. To do this, the local chapter raises funds
and awards scholarships on a fair, non-discriminatory and equitable basis.
Dollars for Scholars awards are for attendance at any recognized college,
university, vocational, or trade school. Organizations and individuals making
awards through Dollars for Scholars, however, may stipulate attendance at
a certain institute or type of institution as part of the selection criteria.
Some organizations and individuals who have granted
scholarships in the past now channel their awards through Dollars for Scholars;
others may elect to do the same. The chapter also accepts donations, memorials,
trusts, grants, and other gifts. Donors may designate whether their gifts
are to be used for direct scholarships or placed in the chapter's trust
fund to maintain a financial base for future scholarships.
Recipients are determined by the local chapter's
award committee. Using a point system, the committee anonymously scores
the applications and assigns the awards. The scholarships are presented
in May at Senior Recognition Night.
