The Eagle Grove Community School District requires 4th, 8th and 11th grade students to complete a resiliency survey each year.  This survey gives  students the opportunity to share their opinions about school. Through the results of this survey, we as an elementary staff identified a concern with school climate based on the low scores dealing with student to student respect.  Teacher responses to a similar survey supported the need to focus on creating a more positive school climate that is conducive to learning.

With the building goal of improving school climate, the Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports framework was presented to staff, with a majority of members voting to move forward with implementation.  A team of volunteers met regularly during the first year to organize information and create necessary documents.  The PBIS team worked very closely with the whole staff to accomplish this.  Several members of the PBIS team also make up the training team.  The training team has attended conferences in Ames, Des Moines and recently received a grant to attend the National Conference in Chicago, Illinois.

We began to collect baseline data using the incident reports in December of 2006.  Teaching the expectations and acknowledging students started at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year.  We will continue to implement more aspects of PBIS throughout the school year.

Eagle Grove Community School District

MISSION STATEMENT

The Eagle Grove School District in partnership with the community will promote in all students the knowledge and skill necessary to become independent thinkers,  lifelong learners, and responsible, productive citizens.

What is Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports?

Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports is a school wide model for developing a positive social culture of climate where there is a

common language, common expectations,

and students expect appropriate behavior from

themselves and others.

Guiding Principles

Academic achievement and appropriate behavioral skills are the results of school and staff working together to provide a continuum of support for all students.  A continuum of academic and behavioral support includes:

Core instruction

 school-wide instruction for all students

Supplemental instruction

instruction interventions for students who are at risk for academic or social and behavioral problems

Intensive instruction

Individualized instruction for students with intense or chronic academic or behavioral problems
